For drug addicts, rehab can be a saving grace. It can help them clear their body of drugs and help them get past the cravings that make them a slave to drug use. However, many addicts have to go through drug rehab many times before they are finally able to give up drugs. For others, they never are able to get clean and succumb to a life of using drugs. While everyone who asks or begs for help to get off drugs probably means it, there are factors that make it difficult to accomplish.

Cravings, depression and guilt make it incredibly difficult to get off drugs for good. The physical cravings for the drug can wrack the body with pain and discomfort while the emotional cravings can be just as bad. Depression is one reason why drug addicts turn to drugs. The ability to numb one is an important factor in drug use and has to be overcome if an drug addict is going to have a fighting chance. The guilt of what a person has done to their family and friends while on drugs also keeps some people trapped. To mask these feelings or to avoid dealing with them, they continue to use.

Cravings: For drug addicts, the first few days are extremely difficult and distressing. Addicts will have chills, throw up and have the sweats. Experiencing these symptoms is bad enough, however, experiencing it with a bunch of strangers can be even more overwhelming. At this point, many addicts want to be anywhere besides drug rehab center and most likely would rather be somewhere getting high so that they can stop the withdrawal symptoms.

Depression: Some addicts may have psychological issues that make rehab especially overwhelming. Depression may have been an issue even before they begin taking drugs and it may have been made worse due to their drug addiction. Drug addiction means a loss of control. Some individuals steal, lie and manipulate to get their next fix. Realizing that have resorted to such behaviour or personhood can be depressing.

Guilt: Many drug addicts feel guilty about using drugs and the things that they have engaged in to get drugs or while on drugs. Because a stint in rehab means that an individual has likely spiralled out of control, there may be some guilt associated with that as well.

The physical and emotional cravings for drugs make it difficult for some addicts to get off drugs. Depression and guilt are two emotions that can keep drug addicts imprisoned.
